Map of Life Solutions is a biodiversity intelligence company that leverages advanced analytical methods developed at the Yale Center for Biodiversity and Global Change. We integrate AI, remote sensing, and ecological data to provide near-real-time insights into species distributions and biodiversity trends. Our work is at the forefront of conservation technology, supporting decision-makers in Corporate ESG teams, conservation project managers, governments, and NGOs with actionable biodiversity insights. Map of Life is one of the winners of the XPRIZE Rainforest competition, a global challenge utilizing robotics, UAVs, AI, and advanced sensing technologies to measure biodiversity in rainforest ecosystems.
We are looking for a Back-End Engineer to develop the scalable, high-performance tools that power our biodiversity intelligence platform. You will play an important role in building data pipelines, APIs, and cloud-based infrastructure, working closely with frontend engineers, scientific team, and leadership team to develop innovative solutions.
What You Will Do
Design, develop, and optimize scalable, secure, and high-performance backend systems.
Build and maintain RESTful APIs for seamless integration with front-end applications and data sources.
Develop and manage data pipelines to ingest, process, and analyze large biodiversity datasets from multiple sources.
Implement cloud-based solutions (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure) to ensure efficient, secure data storage and processing.
Employ relational and NoSQL databases for efficient data storage and indexingImplement logging, monitoring, and alerting systems to maintain platform health and uptime.
Stay ahead of emerging technologies and adopt best practices to enhance system performance.
Who You Are
3 to 5 years of experience in backend development.Proficient in Python, Node.js, or Go.Strong experience in building scalable APIs (RESTful, GraphQL).
Deep knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, BigQuery).
Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure).
Proficiency in Docker and Kubernetes for containerized applications.Familiarity with distributed computing and parallel processing.
Good understanding of authentication, authorization, and API security
Beneficial Qualifications
Experience with geospatial databases & GIS tools (PostGIS, GeoPandas, GDAL).Background in data engineering & ETL pipeline optimization.
Knowledge of event-driven architectures (Kafka, Pub/Sub).
Proficiency in containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
Familiarity with biodiversity, ecological, or environmental datasets.
