Rapid Assessment Fieldwork Specialist

Location: Primarily remote, with in-person training in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. Over 50% of the role will involve travel to remote locations for fieldwork.

Duration: 3–4 months (training and testing period, with potential for full-time role)
Compensation: Salary + Lodging in New Haven for the duration of training

About the Role

We are seeking a disciplined, detail-oriented Rapid Assessment Fieldwork Specialist to support the implementation of innovative biodiversity monitoring solutions. Based in New Haven, you will work with a multidisciplinary team to deploy autonomous UAV systems, collect multisensory data (audio, visual, and eDNA), and conduct field-based laboratory processing.

This role offers hands-on training and experience with cutting-edge biodiversity assessment technologies at the intersection of fieldwork, laboratory science, and emerging ecological methods.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deploy UAV-based systems to collect biodiversity data.

  • Conduct on-site eDNA sampling and field lab processing following established protocols.

  • Maintain accurate records, including sample tracking, detailed field notes, and procedural documentation.

  • Follow molecular and UAV protocols with precision.

  • Travel to remote field sites and work under varying environmental conditions.

Essential Qualifications

  • Academic background in ecology, biology, engineering, computer science or a related field.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong ability to follow complex instructions.

  • Excellent documentation and record-keeping habits.

  • High personal discipline and comfort with focused, repetitive tasks.

  • Experience with fieldwork in remote locations.

  • Comfort in both lab and field environments.

  • Willingness to learn UAV systems and molecular biology protocols (training will be provided).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Ecology, Microbiology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

  • Experience with laboratory procedures

  • Experience with UAVs or drones

  • Familiarity with field data collection and biological sample management.

  • Background in molecular biology techniques or coursework is a plus.

Training & Support

All required protocols — including UAV deployment, eDNA processing, and sample handling — will be taught. Success in this role depends on innate precision, consistency, and a strong sense of responsibility.
