WHO WE ARE

HOW WE WORK
01
Species are the unit
Every number we produce traces back to the species behind it. No black-box index. If you ask why a site scored the way it did, we can show you which species, which pressure, and what changed since 2001.
02
Plain language, always
Outputs a procurement lead, a loan officer or a minister can read without a biologist in the room. Every metric ships with a short read-me.
03
We say what you may claim
And what you may not. We will never promise a claim a standard does not allow, and we are honest about what the science can and cannot yet say about a single practice.
04
Commercial funds public
Revenue from commercial work goes back into the science underneath, and the national data stays free for non-commercial use on mol.org.
THE LICENSE AND THE SCIENCE
Dr. Walter Jetz (Yale University) serves as our Chief Science Advisor. He co-authored the Essential Biodiversity Variables framework our data runs on, and the Species Habitat Index and Species Protection Index, developed by his research group, are component indicators in the UN Global Biodiversity Framework.

WHERE WE STARTED, WHERE WE’RE GOING
2012
Map of Life launches as a research initiative led by Dr. Walter Jetz.
2021
First high-resolution, continental-scale species distribution models.
2022
Three Map of Life indicators adopted into the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at COP15.
2024
First Species Protection Report. Second place in the five-year XPRIZE Rainforest competition.
2025
Map of Life Solutions forms with industry veterans.
2026
SAVE Package v1.0 ships. RISK in paid pilot with a major agricultural trader. IMPACT piloting. A national biodiversity information system running on our data, hosted in-country.

PROVEN IN THE RAINFOREST
The Map of Life Rapid Assessments team took second place in XPRIZE Rainforest, the global competition to find the most innovative technology for exploring Earth’s biodiversity. Drones, new sensors and geospatial AI, proving that non-invasive, scalable monitoring can change how conservation gets done.
That same field kit (drones, eDNA, acoustics, camera traps) is how we ground-truth the models for clients today.
